  • Module 1: Introduction
  • We will begin by having you identify some of the leadership challenges that you specifically
  • want to ensure are covered during these two workshop sessions.


  • Module 2: Developing Yourself as A Leader in A Time of Market Turmoil
  • Examine, in depth, the critical elements to becoming an effective practice / industry group leader.
  • Determine what precisely is the job of being a leader and what it requires of any individual holding the position.
  • Identify how, as a leader, you add value and what specifically it is, that you can do, that is likely to actually affect the success of the group you lead.


  • Module 3: Developing Strategic Direction and Prioritize Lasting Competitiveness
  • With the pace of change and economic instability increasing, explore how to work with your team members to create a strategic direction with competitive offerings that stand out.
  • Discover a process for working with your group to assess your position relative to competitors, for identifying the best areas of emerging opportunity, and for develop specific action plans.


  • Module 4: Getting Everyone Working Together
  • Learn about a tool used by the Big Four and written about in Harvard Business Review, with proven techniques for how to harness your group’s talents.
  • Review prescriptive steps for dealing with problem performers (like those who don’t produce, follow the rules, irritate clients, crush morale, and drive away high performers) that we have been slow to address and that now need some timely attention.

  • Module 5: Learn How to Conduct Effective Meetings: About Outcomes Not Agendas
  • Discover how my research with high-performing teams from different professions taught me about the kinds of meetings that your colleagues will value attending, participating in, and that produce measurable results that have them telling everyone that your meetings are not a waste of time.


  • Module 6: Getting Action Implemented to Counteract the Threat of Economic Slowdown
  • Explore some practical tools and techniques for getting your group working together effectively and determine the kind of behavior everyone thinks they have a right to expect of one another.
  • Help high performing partners achieve what they want – from being able to learn and grow their skills to working on exciting client matters


  • Module 7: Finding Ways to Meaningfully Differentiate Your Group Given Increased Competition
  • With the pace of change and economic instability increasing, examine how (in a more proactive manner) to make your practice/industry group stand out from competitors.
  • Discover 6 distinctive ways you can meaningfully differentiate yourselves in a manner that resounds very favorably with clients, including real world examples.


  • Module 8: The Action Imperative – Question and Answer Session
  • Following from our initial discussions, our concluding session is designed to summarize, synthesize, debate, question and answer any of your “highly specific” practice management and leadership issues.

countries, Patrick J. McKenna (www.patrickmckenna.com) has constructed and defined

competitive strategies for law firm transformation and growth.


His is one of the professions foremost authorities on practice/industry group leadership having authored a dozen pioneering books, including his book First Among Equals: How to Manage a Group of Professionals, (coauthored with David Maister), translated into nine languages, and widely described as the essential guide to practice group leadership.


Patrick comes to this subject with hands-on experience, having actually served for some 18

months, as a co-leader of numerous legal practice and industry groups operating internationally –

from London to Amsterdam; Brussels to New York. He has also been involved in the training of

in-house leaders from companies as large as Intel and John Hancock Financial.
