OVERVIEW

Navigating Global Risk and Disruption:

Law // Politics // Conflict // Technology // Environment

The rule of law is eroding at an international, national and local level. Live wars in Europe and the Middle East combined with a cold war between the US and China mean the risks companies are facing are cross-cutting and relentless. Courts are being weaponized and elections in traditional democracies are being called into question. At the same time technology risks turning the law into an optimization problem for AI to solve at best - and a vehicle for automated legal attacks at worst.

GeoLegal New York will convene a conference across the entire legal ecosystem focusing on how geopolitics and technology are changing the role of law and lawyers. We will look around the corner at the most relevant risks that major companies will be grappling with in the next year. But we will also look further to understand how politics and technology are changing the practice of law. From disinformation and propaganda to the role of AI-powered lobbyists, from the US election to the outlook for the energy market, GeoLegal New York will provide a one stop chance to get up to speed on volatility.

The sheer volume of geopolitical signals has become near impossible to adequately track. Many of these stories present clear and defined risks to businesses of many types. While others provide indicators that broader trends—like a decline in global rule of law—are underway.

This growing volume of news that business leaders have to digest on a weekly basis presents a dilemma for legal and business teams trying to stay ahead of global affairs.

Legal professionals - whether in-house, in firms, or legal tech entrepreneurs - exist in an ecosystem of political, economic and social forces. We could ignore it before - but now the ecosystem is increasingly unstable and fragmented. To do best by their clients, especially in 2024, legal professionals need to look around the corner to understand what to expect and to make nuanced and complex decisions to help navigate an often conflicting matrix of laws and regulations.

GeoLegal: New York, is the first in a series of unique, cutting-edge programs, presented by Inside Practice and Hence Technologies, designed to address the impact of global affairs across the legal profession.

We hope you will join us on October 16, at the NYC offices of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP for this unique forum and geopolitics primer for lawyers – focused on navigating global risk and disruption – and how these cross-cutting issues and challenges impact the way that we engage with our clients and the methods that we adopt (or are compelled to adopt) to deliver our services.

The Legal Profession During Volatility

Gina’s session will take the context from the welcome keynote and connect it to implications for the legal ecosystem. What does political and tech-driven volatility mean for the role of in-house teams? For private practice lawyers? For technology builders or legal industry journalists? By considering each of the elements of the legal ecosystem, participants will come away with a clearer picture of the stresses and opportunities the external environment is causing in the legal industry.

12:15 PM - 12:30 PM Session 6 Focus:

The Return of Multipolarity and What It Means for Legal Professionals

  • The post-WWII Western-led liberal international order with the United States (and Europe) at its center is eroding, slowly but surely being replaced by a more multipolar environment.

AI and the Rise of "Geotech Statecraft"
AI is a key focal point and driver of geopolitical competition between the US and China, as well as concerns about the future of Taiwan. The result: a scramble to lock down the AI technology stack and its associated supply chain. Geopolitical disruption of the technology sector will intensify no matter who is elected president in November, posing challenges for global companies.  It's time to stop "admiring the problem" and take action to understand, assess, and mitigate risks.

Kevin Allison / President / Minerva Technology Policy Advisors

2:15 PM to 2:30 PM Session 10 Focus:

Managing Conflicting Risk When you are Exposed Globally

Explore how minimizing legal risks and meeting compliance requirements in one jurisdiction can imperil a company in another. That is, by virtue of meeting one you violate the other.  Oftentimes there are geopolitical dynamics and drivers that serve as the underlying reasoning for this. There are many examples of this that US companies face, especially when trying to operate in markets like China, KSA, and others.

Michelle d'Amico / Head of Global Intelligence and Insider Risk / Zoom
