OVERVIEW

Navigating Global Risk and Disruption:

Law // Politics // Conflict // Technology // Environment

The rule of law is eroding at an international, national and local level. Live wars in Europe and the Middle East combined with a cold war between the US and China mean the risks companies are facing are cross-cutting and relentless. Courts are being weaponized and elections in traditional democracies are being called into question. At the same time technology risks turning the law into an optimization problem for AI to solve at best - and a vehicle for automated legal attacks at worst.

GeoLegal London will convene a conference across the entire legal ecosystem focusing on how geopolitics and technology are changing the role of law and lawyers. We will look around the corner at the most relevant risks that major companies will be grappling with in the next year. But we will also look further to understand how politics and technology are changing the practice of law. From disinformation and propaganda to the role of AI-powered lobbyists, from the US election to the outlook for the energy market, GeoLegal London will provide a one stop chance to get up to speed on volatility.

The sheer volume of geopolitical signals has become near impossible to adequately track. Many of these stories present clear and defined risks to businesses of many types. While others provide indicators that broader trends—like a decline in global rule of law—are underway.

This growing volume of news that business leaders have to digest on a weekly basis presents a dilemma for legal and business teams trying to stay ahead of global affairs.

Legal professionals - whether in-house, in firms, or legal tech entrepreneurs - exist in an ecosystem of political, economic and social forces. We could ignore it before - but now the ecosystem is increasingly unstable and fragmented. To do best by their clients, especially in 2024, legal professionals need to look around the corner to understand what to expect and to make nuanced and complex decisions to help navigate an often conflicting matrix of laws and regulations.

GeoLegal: London is the first in a series of unique, cutting-edge programs, presented by Inside Practice and Hence Technologies, designed to address the impact of global affairs across the legal profession.

We hope you will join us on
October 23rd, at the London offices of our host A&O Shearman for this unique forum and geopolitics primer for lawyers – focused on navigating global risk and disruption – and how these cross-cutting issues and challenges impact the way that we engage with our clients and the methods that we adopt (or are compelled to adopt) to deliver our services.

The GeoLegal Triangle: How Politics and Technology are Undermining the Law

The rule of law is eroding at an international, national and local level. Live wars in Europe and the Middle East combined with a cold war between the US and China mean the risks companies are facing are cross-cutting and relentless. Courts are being weaponized and elections in traditional democracies are being called into question. At the same time technology risks turning the law into an optimization problem for AI to solve at best and a vehicle for automated legal attacks at worst. This session will cover how you thrive in this environment.

The Growing Gap: Regulatory Ratcheting and Legal Resourcing

As the business operating environment becomes more complex, expertly navigating that environment becomes more valuable. Yet the resources dedicated to such navigation do not, and will not, keep pace with business needs. The solution to closing this gap is to solve for scale, which is far easier said than done. Many legalish functions are setup to fail.

In-house lawyers: How to reframe your purpose, strategy, and behavior (PSB) with your employer client in an era of corporate scandal

  • Purpose (P): to enable your employer client's purpose through excellent legal counsel and process in an ever-changing ecosystem
  • Strategy (S): tell, don't ask, your employer client what ten things it needs, costing ten dollars - not seven - to achieve its purpose
  • Behaviour (B): abandon the massed unconsciousness of your profession and reframe your relationships now, before it's too late, for you

Ciarán Fenton / Leadership Consultant / Ciaran Fenton Limited

2:00 PM  - 2:20 PM Session 6 Focus:

The Fragmentation of the Western-led International Order: Implications for the Rule of Law and International Relations

  • The Western-led liberal international order – based on norms such as democracy, human rights and the rule of law and embodied by institutions like the United Nations, NATO and the World Bank – is crumbling amid shifting global power dynamics, internal political polarization within the West, and a rising backlash against globalization.
  • As the liberal international order deteriorates, international institutions weaken, leading to selective compliance with established global norms and undermining the universality and predictability of legal frameworks – which raises challenges for law firms and corporate actors.
  • Europe, in particular, stands at a crossroads, faced with its own internal contradictions, hesitant to fully align with a single global power, yet lacking the capacity to independently shape its own destiny.
  • One key question naturally follows: what comes next? And thus, what order(s) will emerge in a multipolar world shaped by U.S.-China economic and security competition? What will be the new “rules of the game” for global business?

Matteo Ilardo / Lead Europe Analyst / RANE

2:20 PM - 2:40 PM Session 7 Focus:

Hacking Democracy: Cyber Threat or Cyber Hype?

  • What role does foreign cyber interference really play in elections, and how significant is it?
  • Is the constant talk of cyber disinformation and foreign interference doing more to weaken democracy than the actual threats themselves?

Edward Lewis / Chief Executive Officer / CYXCEL
