In a landscape rife with technological advancements, fear and ambiguity reign supreme when it comes to navigating the complexities of data strategy within law firms.

As access to data becomes more democratized, law firms face critical governance and data literacy challenges across the data lifecycle – from acquisition to use to disposal.  From navigating political dynamics to fostering trust among stakeholders, this forum will explore what happens when we begin to break down data silos and aspire to develop a data management framework – including associated policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines that promote data quality, accuracy, literacy and security consistent with the firm’s business strategy and objectives.

What Do We Mean When We Talk About Data Strategy?

Data is one of the most key strategic business assets (and/or liabilities) that we have as law firms, shaping strategic decisions and operational efficiency.  Embarking on a journey towards effective data strategy requires clarity, alignment, and collaboration.  It’s about making decisions for what's in the best interest of the entire firm and understanding the downstream impacts of the decisions that we make.  Your firm can invest in the best GenAI tools ever imagined. But it must run on good, clean data in order for everything else to work.

In this opening, keynote session, Meredith Williams-Range, Chief Legal Operations Officer at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher will delve into what we mean when we talk about “Data Strategy.”

A law firm’s data strategy must provide a single point of reference for data integration with various organizational systems, with key objectives to define, manage, govern, and analyze critical data sets within the firm. Law firms have to start thinking about the interplay between the 3 primary pillars of data strategy – data collection, data governance, and data analytics.  How do we build and fortify each one of these elements?  How do we even approach this massive, multi-year undertaking and ideally break it down into more palatable steps or components?

There are no shortcuts. Firms cannot focus on any one pillar. It must be all three. The allure of jumping straight into the analytics and reporting piece must be met with purpose, clarity, and context as we design systems with data in mind first – relative to what any of the emerging tech can do. Hence, firms also need to have representation from every group within the organization when it comes to strategy and execution.

Join us as we learn how these fundamental pillars intertwine and form the backbone of a multi-year program aimed at optimizing data usage and decision-making.

Practical Approaches to Data Strategy: A Framework Grounded in Reality

In a landscape rife with technological advancements, fear and ambiguity reign supreme when it comes to navigating the complexities of data strategy within law firms.

Where is the business headed? What are the biggest pain points for the firm? Does the firm have a solid grasp of its own data assets? Who owns data strategy and which stakeholders should have a seat at the table, setting expectations for data-driven decision-making?

Rooted in reality and an understanding that strategy is a team sport that doesn’t happen in a vacuum, this dynamic discussion offers a playbook for jumpstarting and maintaining incremental progress along your data journey.

Data projects – large or small – need to be in service of something specific. Hence the importance of identifying high level priorities that you can influence with data.

Join us as we explore why paralysis often accompanies data strategy initiatives and learn how to navigate roadblocks effectively. Gain insights into the importance of "knowing your why" and tethering projects to firm business objectives, ensuring alignment with broader strategic priorities.

With a focus on tangible outcomes and alignment with firm goals, this session empowers attendees to embark on their data strategy journey with confidence and clarity.

Disambiguating and Structuring Raw Materials into Data Fit for Analytics and Insights: Gunderson Dettmer’s Data Journey… A Fireside Chat

Law firms possess a unique advantage for embracing data-driven approaches and emerging technologies like generative AI due to their reliance on meticulous documentation, logical coherence, and the precise recording of activities relative to each client engagement – providing vast opportunity for converting various data and document repositories into engines of intelligence.

Join us for a conversational "fireside chat" as we delve into Gunderson Dettmer’s data journey as they like many firms, face a unique opportunity to transform themselves into some of the most data-driven organizations in the world.

Gunderson is several years into their own data warehouse and analytics journey and during this fireside chat will focus on:

  • AI for data extraction: how the firm is providing structure to unstructured raw data, turning raw materials (contained within agreements and documents) into structured data fit for analytics and insights.
  • Disambiguating different datasets:  How data insights from one application can flow into other applications to provide accumulating value from internal data and external data and how the firm is using these together to extract invaluable insights.
  • Business impact and ROI: Assessing tangible business outcomes and return on investment achieved through data initiatives.
  • What the firm’s future roadmap looks like: Discussing the firm's vision and plans for advancing its data maturity, embracing emerging technologies, and leveraging data as a strategic asset to drive innovation and competitive advantage.

The Second-Best Time is Now: A True Tale of Modernizing Law Firm Reporting

Modern data, analytics, and reporting are more accessible than ever – even for a law firm. The benefits are undeniable (unless you’re the rare one counting on a lack of data…more on that in the session). But the obstacles can seem insurmountable, not the least of which is, where do we even start?

In this compelling session, Alma Asay (Chief Innovation & Value Officer) and Addison Larrow (Strategic Innovation Analytics Lead) from Crowell & Moring LLP, will share insights and lessons learned from the genesis, business case, and buildout of Crowell’s new data warehouse and how they’re leveraging people, processes, then technology to expand its impact across the firm.

Join us as we explore some of the change management and (seemingly) technical hurdles that the firm has had to navigate, as well as why an Innovation team is uniquely positioned to address cross-functional requirements to achieve business objectives.

The Democratization of Data: Navigating Data Literacy, Collection, Governance, and Stewardship Challenges within the Modern Law Firm

What happens when we begin to break down (data) silos within law firms? Data collection is complicated, as many firms are working with fragmented and legacy systems that do not communicate effectively with each other leading to difficulty in aggregating data.  As access to data becomes more democratized, law firms face critical governance and data literacy challenges across the data lifecycle – from acquisition to use to disposal.  From navigating political dynamics to fostering trust among stakeholders, this lively discussion will explore what happens when we begin to break down data silos and aspire to develop a data management framework – including associated policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines that promote data quality, accuracy, literacy and security consistent with the firm’s business strategy and objectives.

Law firm culture traditionally prioritizes billable hours and client service over data management and analytics. Shifting mindsets and establishing a data-driven culture may encounter resistance from partners and staff who are accustomed to traditional practices. From managing pipeline access to staying abreast of regulatory changes, attendees will gain insights into building and maintaining data stewardship best practices.  Hear from your peers as we delve into the complexities of ownership and collaboration among business owners, IT, and data strategy teams – navigating political dynamics and fostering a data-focused culture that drives adoption and literacy.

IA Before AI: Maximizing LLMs and Interoperability Through Taxonomy and Data Classification

(How do we get the data to be usable?)

In our LLM era, preparing data is still paramount. In this session, we explore how law firms can prepare their data for LLM ingestion and analytics, discussing innovative strategies for data tagging, the role of knowledge graphs, and how the SALI legal data standard can help both of those initiatives.

Join us as we delve into strategies for optimizing your data through classification, which will also ensure interoperability with clients and your vendors. Learn how LLM-backed tools can help tag your documents, time entries, and other legal texts programmatically. And explore how a taxonomy standard can create a common data language, permitting systems to communicate — both internally and externally.

Finally, learn how LLMs, combined with well-structured data, can improve LLM-based reasoning. And how all of the above is easier than you might think!

The Quest for Organic Growth: How Firm Data Strategy Will Accelerate BD, Marketing, and Client Success

How will the firm of the future leverage data to accelerate growth?

With the explosion of AI within the legal industry, law firms are now forced to re-evaluate their approach to data strategy. This includes developing advanced internal data capabilities, migrating to modern data infrastructure, and exploring ways to become data-driven across a range of use cases.

While much industry excitement surrounds how GenAI technology will disrupt the delivery model of legal services, less attention has been focused on the strategic role data will play in business development, marketing, and client success programs.

In this panel discussion we will explore how modern data technologies might reshape law firm thinking about new business generation, relationship intelligence, competitive analysis, client experience, and cross-selling of legal services. We will also look at how a strategic approach to data collection, curation, analytics, adoption, and governance will power the next wave of firm growth.

The discussion will investigate best practices and frameworks to help firms create new BD opportunities, increase the likelihood of winning new business, strengthen competitive advantage, and improve client satisfaction. We’ll also identify how data can help firm stakeholders see around corners to identify growth opportunities, prevent revenue loss, and achieve tangible ROI.
