LEGAL AI

INSIDEPRACTICE PRESENTS:

NEW YORK // NOV 20/21 // 2024

SOLD OUT: JOIN THE WAITING LIST

OVERVIEW

Are the predominant expectations of emerging AI tools and tech being realized this year?

How are law firms accelerating their AI adoption journeysfrom cautious exploration to more aggressive investment in emerging tools and tech?

What strategies are firms employing to fast-track AI adoption and what unexpected challenges and opportunities have emerged as firms begin to integrate AI tools into their practices?

LEGAL AI will serve as a year-end assessment around "the state of GenAI adoption within law firms" – tracking AI investment strategy, tools evaluation, experimentation, and deployment across the legal sector, while shining a light on a handful of firms doing extraordinary work—as well as a select group of leading solution providers within this space.

How is the legal technology landscape evolving? We see consolidation and expansion happening all at once, with new startups popping up at a frequency previously unheard of.  In addition to the abundance of new GenAI tools hitting the market, there are also a number of existing platforms and tools that now have an AI component to them. How are firms keeping track of the legal tech market - vetting and selecting tools and settling on investment strategy?

How has the “Build vs. Buy” consideration evolved this year? How are firms addressing the intricate and ongoing decision-making process when evaluating off-the-shelf GenAI tools against customized, build-and-buy solutions, as well as numerous open-source development opportunities?

How fast and how far should we go? As the demand curve shifts, firms need to adapt. But what should firms be chasing?  What constitutes competitive advantage? And what frameworks are firms using to help guide investment decisions?  What do law firms stand to gain from slow AI adoption? How can firms take advantage of efficiencies that AI tools may have to offer—without undercutting current business models?

We hope you will join us this November 20-21 at the New York offices of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP for an exclusive gathering of law firm leaders, lawyers, and industry professionals, as we share and explore our collective experiences and lessons learned relative to the transformative potential of AI in the legal sector.

Keynote: The Human Benefits of AI for Legal

Jamie Lawless is the Chief Executive of Husch Blackwell, an AmLaw 100 law firm and a widely acknowledged leader in the responsible development of AI tools to assist in delivering legal services. Much discussion of AI in the law focuses on the risk of removing the human element from legal work. Jamie’s keynote argues, instead, that we have underestimated the degree to which using AI will add a human element to the work lives of lawyers.

What Constitutes Competitive Advantage?

Strategic Frameworks to Help Guide AI Investment Decisions

  • Ascertaining as a firm (and at the individual practice area level), what constitutes competitive advantage and strategic value - and potential for high ROI.
  • Methods for identifying and prioritizing AI investments through an ROI-driven/profit-centric lens that requires an understanding of where profit comes from at your firm.
  • Developing robust financial models to assess the impact of AI investments.
  • What do law firms stand to gain from slow AI adoption? (firms’ caution stems from a commitment to a profitability model dependent on high leverage and hourly billing).

Technology as a Primary Component of Legal Training:

Exploring Generative AI's Impact on Lawyer Development

GenAI is already beginning to take work off the table. But how exactly is AI diminishing or removing the “learning surface area” for young lawyers? And how can law firms help to enable junior lawyers to become critical evaluators of GenAI tools, quickly?

  • How are lawyers going to learn to be lawyers? We cannot do it the old way.
  • What does it mean to be an “innovative lawyer” in the current context?
  • How can law firms partner with or collaborate with law schools to build a lawyer development program? And what does this look like in the real world?
  • Showcase of a firm-sponsored GenAI training for summer associates at K&L Gates.

It’s More Nuanced Than Build vs. Buy…

How has the “Build vs. Buy” consideration evolved this year? This panel will address the intricate and ongoing decision-making process that firms face when evaluating off-the-shelf GenAI tools against customized, build-and-buy solutions, as well as open-source development opportunities. This panel will navigate these intricacies, paying particular attention to what can be done collaboratively with open-source models.

  • Off-the-Shelf Tools: Benefits and limitations of readily available solutions.
  • Customized Solutions (Build + Buy): Creating tailored tools that meet specific needs while leveraging existing, customizable tools/platforms.
  • Open-Source Opportunities: Utilizing open-source models for unique use cases and collaborating (via platforms like HuggingFace), enabling firms to share the engineering burden and reduce wasted time and effort.

The UX of AI

There is more to design than simple chatbots when it comes to products that leverage Generative AI. This discussion will dive into UX considerations when building Gen AI solutions, including a case study of how the design of Litera's new AI solution evolved to become the product that it is today. Join us as we explore how thoughtful UX/UI design can reduce friction, build user trust, and improve the adoption of AI tools within law firms – and why firms are going to need to strengthen their own design capabilities as the build v. buy equation continues to evolve.

What Legal Can Learn about GenAI from Other Professionals

It’s clear that GenAI has already made an impact in the legal industry. But lawyers are far from the only ones exploring what GenAI means for their firms and clients, with related professions such as risk & fraud, tax, government and more all undertaking their own GenAI journeys. This session takes insights from other professions to see what Legal can learn about the future of GenAI – and notably, where some legal professionals’ plans and assumptions about GenAI may not be shared by those outside of the industry.

Evolving Client Expectations in a GenAI-Enhanced Legal Environment

In an age of AI ubiquity, what do in-house teams want to see from their outside firms in today’s rapidly expanding digital-first era?  What kind of value-added services might resonate with clients as differentiators for a law firm?  Can we reimagine corporate client/law firm collaboration in a new age in which human capital (inputs; hours of labor spent) is not the only measure of value?

This candid discussion will provide a comprehensive view into client expectations and concerns, offering valuable insights for law firms navigating the integration of GenAI into their practices.  We will also explore what in-house departments are doing with AI and how they are doing it, highlighting predominant use cases, how these use cases are discovered and evaluated, and what today’s most pressing internal challenges look like.

  • Clients' views on the integration of AI in legal services and its impact on efficiency, cost, and outcomes.
  • Acceptable Use of AI Tools: Identifying scenarios where clients expect or prefer the use of AI, such as document review, due diligence, and routine contract analysis.
  • Limitations and Concerns: Explore client reservations about AI, including data privacy, security, and the potential for reduced personalized service.
  • Future Expectations: Discuss clients' vision for the future role of AI in legal services and how firms can align their strategies to meet evolving client needs and expectations.
